Residents in Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Mbeya, Mwanza noted the day began with unusual quietness, with many people choosing to remain indoors due to doubts about whether protests would happen.

The protests were organized to call for political reforms in the wake of the unrest that followed last October's elections which left an unknown number of people dead.

Government Acknowledges Employing Force

Officials have conceded employing force against demonstrators, claiming that some groups were attempting to overthrow the regime.

Correspondents noted on Tuesday streets that were largely deserted in the commercial capital, Dar es Salaam. This was a stark contrast to the city's typical weekday activity.

While quiet, a palpable tension filled the air.

Increased Police Presence Across Cities

Armored vehicles were spotted cruising along major roads and intersections, while personnel were stationed at strategic locations, including around key public infrastructure.

Through online platforms, organizers advised followers to remain vigilant, implying that any protest activity would likely commence later in the day. This communication mirrored previous protest calls in Tanzania, when turnout increased later in the day.

Motorists who ventured out reported regular stops at security checkpoints, where officers questioned drivers about where they were headed.

Government Stance and Prohibitions

Authorities have not provided detailed comments on the increased security or on the scheduled demonstrations.

The government has prohibited the intended demonstrations and cancelled independence day celebrations, advising the public to remain at home.

"With many staying at home the atmosphere is quiet but tense."
